Drama GCSE

This is a two year course taking place on Saturday afternoons from 3pm until 5pm and is available to students in year 9 or upwards. The maximum number of places are 12. Classes take place at St. Andrews School Cobham.

The AQA (SEG) Drama and Theatre Arts syllabus for the GCSE is based on practical experience of a range of theatre skills and techniques and includes written word in the form of notes and evaluation, as well as a final written examination paper.

The course is designed to encourage the development of interest and understanding in a range of drama and theatre experiences; increased self and group awareness; and the growth of imaginative, creative, communication and oral skills.

The exam is in two parts:

a) the practical component (60% of the total marks) for which two practical skills - chosen from a range of performance and design options - are presented for assessment;

b) the written paper (1¾ hours - 40% of the total marks), for which two questions are answered from ten set; these cover plays worked on in lessons, plays seen and practical activities undertaken.

The basic ingredients for successful completion of the course are an interest in and enthusiasm for drama and theatre, and a willingness to take part in a committed, energetic and disciplined way.

Please note that it is necessary for candidates to sit the written paper at another centre (not their own school).
